This past weekend at Burton Sailing Club, the Rooster RS Tera UK Inland Championships delivered everything you’d want from a national event: tight racing, a friendly club atmosphere, and plenty of growth moments for sailors and coaches alike with challenging conditions with everything from 0.5 knots up to 22 knots!

While the Main fleet battled it out across a range of conditions, I had the privilege of working with the Regatta Fleet — a group of keen, developing sailors enjoying their time on the water and learning key skills for the tricky conditions.
Focused Learning, Big Gains
We started the weekend with a clear goal: give every sailor a meaningful takeaway from each session with a desire of wanting to be in main fleet one day. We began the weekend with perfecting our upwind sailing angles, by analysing our tacking and sail settings for strong winds. Key takeaways was creating our routines for manoeuvres like our tacks, but following realising that there were 7-8 steps which are hard to remember all the time, it is easier to split the tack into three sections: the entry, middle, and exit. With these three sections, it is easier to analyse the tack to see what went well and what needs improving.
Creating a Supportive Environment
Regatta Fleet racing can feel like a big step — especially at a national event. We kept the vibe friendly and constructive, encouraging sailors to have a good time, share what was working, and ask questions throughout.
Looking Ahead
The sailors in this fleet are the future of the RS Tera class. As coaches, it’s always rewarding to see sailors finish a regatta not just with better skills, but with even more excitement for the sport and wanting to take part again!
Well done to all of the sailors across the fleets and thank you to Coach Lucie for support over the weekend.
Main Fleet Preparations
Each morning, I organised an important briefing open to all main fleet competitors to go over key points which are necessary to know before each day including:
Detailed dive into the forecast
Highlighting important points from the racing documentation
Strategic points for racing at Burton SC
It was great to see the uptake with so many sailors joining. For those events I am unfortunately not able to attend in person, these briefings will be published online to help with regatta preparation.
