What a winter. It has been a great winter training and we concluded our winter training squad for the UK RS Tera Southern Region at Frensham Pond Sailing Club. We had multiple focus points across the weekend trying to wrap up the weekend:
Finalising mark roundings and getting set after marks
Strategic planning and fulfilment on the first leg
Light wind boat handling and speed
We were dealt some challenging conditions which were sub 5 knots, but this allowed us to find some holes in sailors performance. We analysed a lot of work in super light wind boat handling and how to keep flow as long as we can.

Think about our routine
The first beat sets the tone for the entire race. Over the weekend we focused on how sailors can move from simply reacting to the fleet to actively planning their route up the beat.
Before the start, sailors were encouraged to explore 3 areas:
Where is the wind?
Which side looks better?
Where is the first tack?
Rather than sailing without a plan, the goal was to commit to a simple strategy early, then adjust based on what the wind and fleet are doing.
Light wind boat handling and speed
Light winds demand patience and precision. Small movements make a big difference, and the sailors spent time refining how they move the boat efficiently. In light winds, the goal is always the same: keep the boat flowing. Keeping a lower angle for flow mode and weight forward in the boat to reduce drag by lifting the transom out of the water.
With the season approaching, the goal now is simple: transition from a training mindset into a racing mindset. Small improvements in decision-making, boat handling, and race execution will make a big difference when the fleet lines up at the first event which is the Start of Season Championships.
