We are back in Rutland for the 2025 RYA Eric Twiname Junior Championships to kickstart the season ready for the class association events in a few weeks time. This 3-day event marked a brilliant start to the season, bringing together hundreds of young sailors for an action-packed weekend of racing and development ahead of the upcoming class association events.

On the water, junior sailors experienced a variety of new and exciting race formats. From short-course team racing-style events to classic long-course races with multiple starts each day—and even a marathon race around the reservoir—the weekend offered something for everyone and plenty of opportunities to grow.

I had the privilege of leading the RS Tera fleet coaching for both the Sports and Pros. With a wide range of abilities across the group, it was a rewarding challenge to support each sailor’s development—whether that meant helping newer racers build confidence and tackle unfamiliar formats or guiding top-end competitors through protest scenarios and podium pushes.

Perhaps the most valuable aspect of the weekend was the sheer amount of learning that took place. For many sailors, this was their first time racing under the watchful eye of on-the-water jurors—an invaluable experience ahead of this summer’s RS Tera World Championships. It was clear that many participants treated the event as a stepping stone to prepare for upcoming major competitions like the RS Tera Inland Championships and the RS Feva Nationals, setting personal goals and identifying areas to refine.

A huge congratulations to the podium finishers and to the RYA for organising a well-run event. The innovative race formats, combined with a supportive environment, made for a fantastic weekend—and we’re excited to see many of these elements carried forward into future class regattas.
