The 30-second routine before every start

A great start rarely happens by accident.

Most sailors know the importance of line bias, time-on-distance and positioning, but many still arrive in the final minute without a clear routine. Under pressure, decision-making becomes reactive rather than proactive.

The best sailors simplify the chaos.

The final 30 seconds

As the countdown approaches zero, your focus should narrow onto three key questions:

1. Am I accelerating or stopping?

One of the biggest mistakes sailors make is spending too much time looking around and not enough time managing boat speed.

In the final moments before the gun, speed is king.

A perfectly positioned boat that is stationary will often lose out to a slightly less favoured boat travelling at full speed. Keep asking yourself:

  • Is my sail trimmed correctly?

  • Is my boat free to accelerate?

  • Do I have clean air?

Your primary goal is to hit the line moving fast and under control.

2. What is my escape plan?

The start rarely unfolds exactly as planned.

Boats stop unexpectedly. Gaps disappear. Wind shifts develop.

Before the final approach, identify your escape route. If the boat to windward bears away or the gap closes, where will you go? Having a backup option allows you to react instantly rather than hesitate.

3. What happens after the gun?

Many sailors focus entirely on crossing the line and forget the next two minutes of the race. Before the gun sounds, have a clear picture of what you want to achieve after starting:

  • Hold a lane?

  • Tack onto a shift?

  • Stay with a fleet group?

  • Protect a side of the course?

Your start should support your overall strategy, not be independent from it.

Build consistency

The most successful sailors don't rely on instinct alone. They develop repeatable routines that help them perform under pressure.

Whether you're racing at a club event or a national championship, spending the final 30 seconds asking these three questions can dramatically improve your starts.

Simple routines create clear thinking, and clear thinking creates better decisions.
