RS Feva HISC Squad 25/26 Weekend 1

We kicked off our first Feva training squad weekend out at Hayling Island SC with a great opening session focused on boat handling, downwind modes, and refining teamwork between helm and crew. Conditions were too light on the Saturday meaning we covered theory and then managed to hit the water for the afternoon. Sunday brought more breeze focusing on boat handling in 15-20 knots.

Boat handling foundations

We started with the basics: balance, trim, and clean coordination in manoeuvres. The aim was simple—keep the boat flat, keep it moving, and stay active. Sailors worked on smooth transitions and maintaining flow through turns, setting the tone for consistent handling throughout the weekend.

Downwind modes

A core theme was understanding the three key Feva downwind modes:

  • Low & Slow – Deep angles, relaxed trim, and patience. Great for soaking lower or defending lanes.

  • Middle Diddle – The default mode. Stable, moderate angles with continuous kite trimming and steady heel control.

  • High & Fast – Power mode to build speed or escape traffic. Requires strong hiking, tight coordination, and proactive trimming.

Learning when to shift modes helped sailors link gusts and control VMG more intentionally.

Tacking breakdown

We also refined tacks by focusing on setup and timing: build speed, initiate with a smooth roll, crew crosses first with fast hands, helm follows with minimal tiller, and both sailors roll the boat down together into a clean exit. Small improvements here created big gains.

Helm & crew roles

To finish, we clarified key responsibilities:

  • Helm: eyes out for breeze and traffic, lead communication, steer smoothly.

  • Crew: manage power through trims and balance, anticipate pressure changes, and keep the boat flat.
